Sick Leave
Torpedo7 Fitness offers generous sick leave benefits over and above that provided for in legislation. You become entitled to take paid sick leave after three months of starting, not six months as provided for in the Holidays Act. Each year you have sick leave entitlement of up to eight days, rather than the standard five days in the Act with any unused days carried over to the next year. There is no maximum for carried over sick leave so if you don’t use it, you won’t lose it. This is to protect your income if you are unable to attend work because:
• You are sick or injured
• Your spouse (including de facto relationship) is sick or injured
• A person who depends on you for care is sick or injured
We know that most people don’t take time off work unless it’s necessary. Therefore sick leave days are generally ‘no questions asked’. This means if your Manager has no reason to doubt you, then you won’t be asked for a medical certificate. However, your Manager is entitled to request a doctors certificate if the period of illness or injury is three consecutive days or more (whether these days are work days or not). Your Manager may also ask for a medical certificate for under three days’ absence if the company pays for this. You are entitled to attend a doctor of your choice. When we request a doctor’s certificate, we may delay your sick leave payment until we receive this.
If annual holidays have started, or about to start, and you or a person who depends on you for care becomes ill, you may take sick leave as a result. If sick leave is exhausted, Torpedo7 may allow you to take annual holiday entitlements if any entitlements are available.
Sick leave shall not be paid in respect of any statutory holiday for which you are entitled to full pay nor for any day on which you are receiving compensation under the Accident Compensation Act 1982, nor for any day on which you are not normally rostered to work.
